Choice
of Treatment Couches - How To Choose
Try to choose the model of couch
to fit your application, i.e. keep
it minimal. It's very easy to add
every possible option, but remember
that they are all going to add weight
to the couch. If you can't lift
the couch or it's uncomfortable
to move around, then you have defeated
yourself.
In order to make a decision about
your choice of couch, you need to
ask yourself a number of questions.
- Does the therapy necessitate
the client sitting up?
- Is the couch intended mainly
for you to work on, or do you
intend to share it with partners
of wildly different heights, or
use it for very different therapies?
- Is the weight of the coach
suitable for you?
Types of
Couch - Custom Built Fixed Height
or Adjustable Height
A myth seems to have grown up
that adjustable couches are the
total answer. It is true that they
offer a certain flexibilty. Whilst
they are particularly ideal for
students, and clinics with different
therapists using the same couch.
For many individual therapists,
a fixed height couch tailored to
their height can offer a far more
cost effective and practical solution.
Adjustability has its own costs,
not only in financial terms, as
the couches are nearly always more
expensive, but also they tend to
be heavier. Therefore, the question
needs to be asked, that once the
couch is adjusted, will it ever
be readjusted? In practice, very
often not!
Width of
Couch
The standard width of the couch
is 24", this width suits the
vast majority of applications. If
you know that you are going to be
working on some bigger clients,
then extra width can be a godsend,
but remember that a) you have to
be able to work across the couch,
and b) you have to be able to carry
it. Generally, 28" is the maximum
practical width for massage.
How to Measure

 |
|
How do I determine correct &
comfortable height for massage:
The correct height for you is the
height you feel comfortable to work
at.
However, there is a widely used
and reasonably foolproof rule of
thumb used to determine the couch
height, as shown in the diagram.
Normally, if the couch is measured
correctly, it will account for 90
- 95% of the body sizes you are
likely to encounter.
If you normally work barefoot then
measure without shoes or if you
work in shoes measure that way.
In general, it is quite comfortable
to work as far as 1" down in
height, but not 1" upwards.
Ideally, if you have the opportunity,
try to work at the height you have
decided upon, to reassure yourself
it is correct. Maybe you've found
a couch at college that feels right.
Take in a tape measure and check
it's height and remember, if it
feels right - it probably is right!
Some sports therapists, especially
LSSM, like to work deeper and measure
from downward extended finger tips
